Guide G5 IT advisory
Use advisory when the missing outcome is a decision, plan, or bounded artifact.
Support restores work and managed IT owns recurring operations. Advisory is different: leadership needs evidence organized into a decision, roadmap, priority set, assessment, or implementation brief. The clearer the question, the easier it is to choose an appropriate specialist route.
G5 · Entry 01 Deliverable before activity
Describe what leadership must be able to decide or do next.
Common bounded questions include a Law 25/PIPEDA compliance review and a cloud migration or virtualization decision.
Assessment
A bounded view of current state against stated criteria, with evidence, limitations, and prioritized findings.
Roadmap
A sequenced set of decisions and work items with dependencies, ownership, and a practical planning horizon.
Decision brief
Options, constraints, tradeoffs, risks, and a recommendation tied to the organization’s actual question.
Implementation brief
Scope, assumptions, acceptance evidence, dependencies, roles, and unresolved decisions for a future project.
G5 · Entry 02 Route comparison
Do not buy advisory when another responsibility is clearer.
| Needed outcome | First route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Restore a blocked workflow | Support | The outcome is operational recovery, not a decision artifact. |
| Own recurring administration | Managed IT | The gap is dependable operational responsibility. |
| Evaluate controls or priorities | Specialist review | The outcome is findings and prioritized action. |
| Choose a direction or sequence work | Advisory | The outcome is a decision, roadmap, or implementation brief. |
G5 · Entry 03 Scoping checklist
A useful advisory request has a decision owner.
- The business question and why it matters now.
- The person or group responsible for the decision.
- The environment, processes, or services in scope.
- Known constraints, dependencies, and prior decisions.
- The artifact needed: findings, roadmap, options, or implementation brief.
- What is explicitly excluded from the engagement.
